Lilia Ziamou

Lilia Ziamou is an interdisciplinary artist based in New York City. Her subject is the female body, her interest: how technology can transcend biological and ideological constraints that shape or limit the body’s exposition. Her works allude to the body transformed through technological interventions in physical and virtual worlds. The forms and surfaces reference the human at the same time as they intervene on its category. Lilia Ziamou combines classical techniques such as carving, casting and draping with digital fabrication and synthetic materials, in order to effect a multifaceted shift. She sees the body not as a sum of its limits but as an unbounded, multiple entity, freely “embodying” its futures.
Recent exhibitions include Sojourner Gallery, New York, NY (2023), Museo La Tertulia, Cali, Colombia (2022), Whitebox, New York, NY (2022), Undercurrent, Brooklyn, NY (2021), Filter Space, Chicago, IL (2021), Kimmel Galleries, New York University, NY (2019) - solo.

Her works are available for purchase on the AWS x Voice Storefront.

(Im) material Dress #1 and (Im)material Dress #2 (2023) are unique digital paintings. The (Im)material Dress series explores the possibilities of representation of the physical body in virtual environments. In this series, the virtual body is constructed by capturing interactions of the physical body with personal objects. This new, constructed virtual body gets its meaning from both the physical body itself and facets of personal history. Our ‘material’ becomes ‘immaterial’. In this series, Lilia Ziamou places her 3-dimensional works on her body, photographs them, and combines photographic fragments to create the digital paintings.
