Beyond the Folk:

Curated by: AWS Gallery, Nina Paiva, Dama Galería

Folklore is a search for identity and a medium through which to sustain it. It doesn’t come from the top, it comes from the people. Folklore comes from inside us as a desire to reconnect with each other and the spaces around us in a world that sometimes feels fraught and lost. From looking backwards to creating something new, we find a way to reconnect across communities, borders, and oceans.

Everyone has a story. Since its origins, Folklore has been integral to the formation of civilisations. Whether religious or spiritual, the underling tenants behind the meaning and origins of the word “Folklore” aims to tell the stories passed down from generation to generation amongst our families and friends. Through Folklore, we experience other peoples’ traditions; we experience the magic of the universe; we delve into worlds foreign and mystical unfamiliar to our everyday lives. When the idea of life seems too overwhelming or the notion of death too daunting and too depressing to think about and to imagine, it is through Folklore and the stories that we tell which help us survive and make sense of an all-consuming universe.
